Nikolina Kamenova Dobreva (Bulgarian: Николина Каменова Добрева, pronounced [ˈnikolinɐ ˈdɔbrɛvɐ]; built-in Jan nine, 1989),[1] known professionally as Nina Dobrev ( DOH-brev), is a Canadian actress. Her kickoff acting part was every bit Mia Jones in the CTV drama series Degrassi: The Next Generation. She subsequently became known for portraying Elena Gilbert and Katherine Pierce on The CW's supernatural drama series The Vampire Diaries.

Dobrev has also appeared in several feature films, including the 2012 coming-of-age drama The Perks of Being a Wallflower, the 2014 activity comedy Allow'south Be Cops, the 2015 horror comedy The Final Girls, the 2017 action thriller XXX: Return of Xander Cage, and the 2017 science-fiction drama Flatliners.

Early life

Dobrev was born Nikolina Kamenova Dobreva in Sofia, Republic of bulgaria (and so the People's Republic of Bulgaria), and immigrated to Canada at age ii, where she was raised in Toronto, Ontario.[2] [3] Her father, Kamen Dobrev, is a estimator specialist and her mother, Michaela Dobreva (née Radeva), is an artist. She has an older brother.[iv]

Dobrev attended Vradenburg Inferior Public School and J. B. Tyrrell Sr. Public School, where she started ballet and jazz classes and competed in rhythmic gymnastics.[3] She took acting classes at Armstrong Acting Studios in Toronto.[5] Dobrev later attended the arts program at Wexford Collegiate School for the Arts in Scarborough[six] until her graduating year.

Dobrev entered post-secondary studies at Ryerson Academy in Toronto, majoring in sociology,[seven] though her pursuit of an acting career prevented her from graduating.[8]

Career

Dobrev's first major interim role was as Mia on the teen drama television serial Degrassi: The Next Generation, a office she played for three seasons starting in 2006.[2] She appeared in several feature films in the mid-2000s, including Fugitive Pieces and Away from Her. Dobrev also headlined a number of boob tube films, including Sci Fi Channel's Never Weep Werewolf,[9] MTV'southward The American Mall,[10] and two Lifetime original movies.

Activism and charity

Dobrev supports multiple charitable causes, including Puma's 2011 non-profit Project Pinkish, which supports numerous breast cancer charities, and Hunger Bites, an organization that is dedicated to reducing hunger in 27 districts across Pennsylvania. Dobrev is also recognized for her long-term involvement with the We movement, a Canadian-based charity which empowers youth to be agents of alter.
